ZagoraPresentation of the City of Zagora
In the southeast of the kingdom, on the middle course of Draâ, is located the province of Zagora. It covers an area of ​​23,000 km². Zagroa is located 170km further south of the city Ouarzazate. With its strategic position, Zagora is the main city before the great Moroccan desert.
History of the city of Zagora
The history of the Zagora region goes back to time immemorial, as evidenced by the rock engravings at Foum Chena and Tazarine and the giant necropolis of Foum Larjane to lghir N'tidri to M'hamid El Ghizlane. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Saadi Chorfas came from the Middle East to Tagmadart.
In the 16th century, the Saadi Chorfas conquered the Sub-Morocco and northern Morocco, before realizing that of the country of Western Sudan by the famous road of Timbuktu. This great expedition ensured the commercial and cultural prosperity of Morocco.
During the reign of the Alawite dynasty, the region has been given special interest since liberation by the great Sultan My Mohamed ben cherif in the 17th century and more particularly during the reign of the great and famous My Ismail. His son Cherif Ben Ismail went to Aghlan of Beni Zoli, where he installed the seat of his authority (wilaya of Draa Sijilmassa). The valiant king also relied on Zaouia Naciria for the diffusion of knowledge in neighboring African countries. This Zaouia is endowed with a rich library which conceals valuable works of theology, history, and medicine where is preserved the oldest manuscript dated from the 13th century. After the death of My Ismail in 1727, the region experienced periods of instability but remained faithful to the Alawite throne.
Geography & climate of the city of Zagora
The Zagora area is crossed by the Jbel Bani, Ordovician chain constituting the western limit of the Tazarine basin and bypassing the Tamegroute zone towards Foum-Zguid.
The valley of the Draa means, extends on 26 000ha a string of oases presenting a strange greenery in this pre-Saharan environment. Its cultivation largely depends on the inflow of water from the outside. Other topographical compartments; mountains, plains and desert plateaus, are exploited for pastoral purposes by sedentary and nomadic herds.
Zagora is dominated by the chain of Anti-Atlas.
The climatic environment is generally part of the Saharan bioclimatic stage.

- The village of Tamegroute: 18km from Zagora, former high place of Zaouia Nassiria, well known for its Koranic library, which includes very valuable manuscripts and its pottery factory, with green as a specific color for its works basic clay.
- Ksar d'Amezrou, 3km south of the city, on the foothills of the Zagora mountain, this fortified village dates from the 18th century. Ksar is still inhabited.
